Lent is the 40-day season of fasting which begins on Ash Wednesday (25 February this year) and ends the day before Easter Sunday, when we all begin to stuff our faces with chocolate eggs.
Lent is supposed to honour the time Jesus spent resisting temptation in the desert and many people choose to give up something during this period, most commonly unhealthy food, alcohol or other unwholesome treat.
If you are stuck for ideas, here is our list of suggestions – how long do you think you can last?
Chocolate

Shame really, as you have probably only just given up on your New Year’s resolution and started eating the stuff again. Nevertheless, chocolate is one of the most common luxuries people give up for Lent, mainly because it’s high fat and sugar content mean it’s fairly adept at making you fat. Just be strong and think of all those Crème Eggs waiting for you at the other end.
Shopping

Difficult to imagine for most of you no doubt, especially with all those closing down sales going on, but if the current economic crisis tells us anything, it’s that this country needs a good old break from buying things we can’t actually afford.
Going to bed with make-up on

When he was a wee nipper, your author used to think he was clever by going to bed with his school uniform on, thinking this would allow him to get up late. But the only thing it got him was a ticking off from his mum, which is what you will get if you make a habit of going to bed without removing your slap. Not washing your face and moisturising can lead to premature ageing as your skin weakens and bacteria thrive.
Fast food

If your greatest weakness if for burgers, pizzas and suspicious looking kebabs, then make these trans-fat heavy foods the thing you give up for Lent. Six weeks without junk food will do your figure, complexion and fitness a world of good and chances are you will probably also save some cash.
Stroppiness

Does your boyfriend look you in the eye and say that, honestly, honestly, there is simply nothing in the world he would change about you? Trust me, he’s lying. And if your greatest vice is throwing teenage strops, then give your partner/parents/total stranger a break for 40 days at least.
Laziness

You want to feel that you have earned that sumptuous Easter egg chocolate, don’t you? If your idea of getting the recommended 30 minutes of exercise every day is to run to Pret a Manger every lunchtime, then start doing some proper exercise instead. Join a running club, try Bikram yoga or go to www.theflofitness.com for a truly innovative way to stay in shape.
Social networking

Addictive they may be, but social networking sites like Facebook and Bebo can play havoc with your – ironically – social life and career. Imagine a world where you didn’t compulsively check your page every 15 seconds, spend all day at work looking at pictures posted by someone you haven’t seen for 15 years or, heaven forbid, people actually met to talk face to face. And don’t even mention Twitter, which has taken us into a whole new world of procrastination
Alcohol

Unlike cigarettes, we would never tell you to give up alcohol forever, but we would definitely recommend taking a break from the loopy juice once in a while. You will be amazed at the impact on your health; booze is extremely calorific and regular consumption will make you feel lethargic and, well, a bit minging. Go dry for a few weeks and feel a spring return to your step.
Television

Well, even us saintly Life & Style staffers would admit that to go completely cold turkey on telly is pushing things a bit too far (I mean, what would we do without Mad Men?) but we could all definitely do with cutting back on time spent in front of the idiot box. The average Brit now spends an astonishing 26 hours a week watching telly (3.7 hours a day). Read a book for Chrissakes.
Mobile phones

Ryanair may have just announced that it is the first airline to allow passenger to use mobile phones on board, but if anything this is a sign that we all need to cut back on usage. You don’t actually need it, you only think you do.
Stress

We all have too much of it in our lives and chances are we can probably do something about a lot of it. Has something been weighing on your mind for ages? Too much pressure in your job? Got some bills that need paying? Get organised and tell yourself that for the next six weeks at least you are going to be proactive and will start by cutting acres of stress out of your life.
Sex

Just kidding! Really - don’t even think about it.
